Reminders:
Flatbread's Fundraiser is tomorrow night, May 29, from 5- 9 p.m.
• Safe Passage Service Team Meeting on Wed., May 30, 7-8 p.m. in Community Services Center. Student & Parent meeting.  Topics to be discussed listed below.

May 23, 2007
•  Our next meeting: Wednesday, May 30, 7-8 p.m., Community Services Center- Parent and student.

• Check your May 23 e-mail for important files: Roommate list, Flatbread volunteers, & Service Team Information Pack from Rob Tinsley, our Safe Passage contact in Guatemala. Please read through the Info Pack carefully but keep in mind that some of the information has changed. I plan to talk about this document at our parent / student meeting. If you have questions, please write them down to ask me at meeting rather than e-mail me now. There is a lot to digest in that packet and it will generate questions; hopefully I'll have the answers you need at the meeting.

• At the May 30 meeting we'll talk about the itinerary, safety issues and guidelines, cell phone usage, airline luggage guidelines, transportation to and from Logan, t-shirts, money exchange and handling, documents, Spanish use, snacks, packing list and clothing, contact information, and excursions during the week.

• Transportation to and from Logan: Concord Trailways bus TO Logan on Sat., June 23. The bus leaves at 3:15 a.m. with a 5:30 a.m. arrival. (Flight departs at 8 a.m.) We'll be carrying Safe Passage supplies to Guatemala so we'll have a lot of baggage on the way down. (Tote bags will be packed at Yarmouth office)  Return FROM Logan: July 1. Two parents have volunteered  to drive vans to pick us up in Logan for return trip to Cape.

• Flatbread's Fundraiser is this Tuesday, May 29. We need a few more volunteers to man the table. I'll be there all evening but it would be best if students man the table. Let me know if you can fill in for an hour or two. Bring your family, friends, teams, co-workers, etc. Should be a fun evening!

• Thank you very much to Sheila M. for offering her home and hospitality for the Spanish-a-thon. It was good practice for everyone to listen to and speak Spanish outside of the classroom. We've raised $490 to date from the Spanish-a-thon and there are more pledges to come in. If you have money that you forgot to turn in, please give it to me or the Community Services office. Label it "CE Safe Passage Spanish-a-thon".

Links to resources about Guatemala.

February  9, 2007:
Check out our hotel, Posada Lazos Fuertes, on the web. Jack Q. showed me this site today.

Also, you can google "Lazos Fuertes" to see other sites describing the inn, such as: http://www.sailing-diving-guatemala.com/hotels/lazos-photos.htm

February 8, 2007
Notes from meeting:
1. Due to a change in US Airways schedule, we've had to change our intinerary.  (They no longer fly out of Guatemala City on Mondays.)
We still depart on June 23 but we'll return late Sunday evening, July 1.
2. You should start to apply for a passport if needed or verify that your current passport will be valid through July 1, 2007. Also, parents should make sure that they have a current passport just in case of emergency.
3. Vaccinations needed:
Hepatitis, Typhoid. Be sure boosters are up to date, diptheria- tetanus, measles, etc. Check now with your family physician because you need at least 4-6 weeks before your trip to allow time for shots to take effect. Source --CDC website: http://www.cdc.gov/travel/camerica.htm#vaccines
4. Start to think of activities that our service team can prepare to teach the children of Safe Passage. Also, we need fundraising ideas.
5. Some activity ideas:
   • Help children create an individual "Soy yo" booklet. We take photos of child, print them, then help child create a personalized book that he or she has dictated to us.
   • Make simple musical instruments out of recycled materials and teach / create simple songs with children.
   • Make puppets and produce a simple puppet show. We'd probably have to create one ahead of time as an example.
   • Teach some cooking skills. There is a new stove at Safe Passage built by a Maine volunteer group.
   • Teach playground games, such as Four Square. We could purchase playground balls and pumps to donate.
   • Purchase children's books in Spanish to donate to their school library.
   • Collect toys for the new day care center.
6. Fundraising ideas:
      • Yankee Candle sales. We keep 40% of total raised.
      • Bottle drive
      • Car wash
      • Dinner
      • Solicit donations of items such as personal hygiene or school supplies or specific items requested by  SP.
7. Contact our student leaders or Sra. Dana with ideas that you have. Katie and Caitlin will contact you soon with their e-mail addresses.

January 30, 1007

Meeting date has been set for Thursday, February 8, 7-8 p.m. in the Community Room. Meeting is for service team members and parents.

January 26, 2007

Another article about Hanley Denning in today's Prensa Libre.

Students, it's a good idea to periodically log onto Prensa Libre, the Guatemala City newspaper, to get a feel for the Guatemalan culture and current events. You don't have to read extensive articles - just read a sports report, weather report, or go to the "Chicos" site for children. A great way to start to internalize some of the vocabulary you will be hearing and using.

January 25, 2007
We are planning a student and parent meeting for the week of Feb. 5. The meeting will either be on Feb. 5 or Feb. 8. I'm still firming up the day and I'll let you know the date as soon as possible. The time will be from 7-8 p.m. in the Community Services building.

Agenda for the meeting:
1. Meet the Service Team members.
2. Update about the tragic news regarding Hanley Denning and news from the Safe Passage office. How does it impact us?
3. Paperwork from Safe Passage
4. Timeline / agenda / budget for our service team
5. Our next steps as a team:
   a. Student leaders
   b. Fundraising ideas / plans
   c. What will be the focus of our team? What services / talents do we have collectively that we can contribute to the Safe Passage program?

Future meetings will be primarily for service team members but given the recent news about Safe Passage it's best if we all meet together, students and parents, in February.
