                                                                                                                                         June 4, 2010
Dear Parents,
Well, it’s hard for me to believe, but this is the last parent letter of the school year. I can’t thank you enough for your support, help, time, gifts, and concern. Each and every one of our children has grown so much!
You’ll be seeing several other things come home over the next few days. One will be the blue spelling folder that has a record of all the spelling tests your child has taken this year (on their spelling cards). Also, there is a list of high frequency words that, ideally, each child will know how to spell when they reach fourth grade. The words highlighted on the list in green are the words your child is still working to master in isolation and in context. I will also be sending home several papers/assessments that I have collected throughout the year. Eventually, binders with science, reading, and social studies materials will come home, as will math books and writer’s notebooks. I know that I get caught up day to day on individual skills and goals, but this time of year, when I look back over all we’ve attempted and accomplished, I am so proud of our kids. Please take a little time and review these materials - note how much your child has learned - each and every one has worked so hard!
Several parents have asked what they can do to help their students stay in the academic loop over the summer. I believe that kids need LOTS of time outdoors and unstructured play with friends.  I also think it is important to continue reading a little each day (but if you miss a day or two along the way, that’s OK too.) Recent research suggests that kids reading just 5 or 6 books at their own level over the summer can help prevent “summer slide” - the phenomenon that some children lose academic ground over the summer. Coming home are some suggestions from our math program for math practice. Summer is a great time to reinforce time and money skills in the natural course of the day. Expand beyond just “What time is it?” to “If we need to be there by 2:30, and it takes 15 minutes to get there, what time should we leave?”. Continue counting money, but add “How much will it cost if we both get ice cream cones?” or “If I have $5.00, how much more money do I need so we can both go to the movies?”. On car rides, math facts and high frequency spelling words can help to pass the time. Addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts (to 10s definitely, to 12s ideally) should be solid for the beginning of fourth grade (and division facts should be well “started”). And for writing practice, there is nothing more natural than sending a postcard to a friend or relative.
Wednesday is our field day. We will be at the Hannaford Field (the turf field at the High School) from 9 to about 11:00. This is an exciting event and we hope you can all join us for all (or part) of the fun. Mr. Shields has asked that there be no dogs brought to the fun (though other family members are welcome!) and that we make sure kids are contained within our class “sitting area”. If you are able to be with us, I will ask you to please help me keep our class together (not always an easy task on an exciting, good weather day!). If the weather doesn’t cooperate, field day will be postponed until Friday, the 11th. (Keep our fingers crossed, as Friday afternoon is our swimming adventure.) Mr. Shields has told us that Sneakers are required to participate”. Remember sun block, water bottles, and dress for the weather!
There will be no homework these last 2 weeks of school.
Allied Arts for the rest of the year include Music on Monday, Gym and Health on Tuesday, no Art on Wednesday (due to Field Day), Computer Lab on Thursday, and Media Center on Friday. The last week of school we will have Music on Monday, Gym and Health on Tuesday, and, on the last day of school, Art.
Here’s wishing for a summer of warm sun, cool breezes, and relaxing days. I’m looking forward to long walks, working with my “guiding eyes” puppy, riding my pony, and “veging” on my deck with some good books.
